I was reading this interesting article about the success of the Smart car in Canada. I didn’t realize it wasn’t available in the US, but as this quote from the story suggests, it’s probably not what Americans are looking for:

The entry-level auto segment – from subcompacts like the Smart to cars like the Toyota Corolla – make up 40 per cent of the Canadian market and growing.

“In America it’s 22 per cent and declining,” says DesRosiers.

The large luxury-sports segment – which includes the biggest SUVs – make up about 10 per cent of Canadian sales, compared with 27 per cent in the United States.

Sin in the City

I’ve been directing so many people to watch these trailers and promised to send links to others, this will serve as a reminder.

Sin City looks amazing, and early reviews have been stellar. I think a trip out next weekend to see it will be in order. Like the trailers, though, I think the Alexis Bledel content of the actual movie will be far too brief for my liking.

Today's Special Paste

For all its usefulness, Microsoft Word can be really irritating. Like how the default Print icon sends jobs directly to the printer. Or its ‘helpful’ autoformatting. Don’t even get me started on Clippy and his pals (I thought these guys were being retired)! These are just some of the things I change immediately upon installation.

Now, it’s nifty and all how the program can take just about any copied formatted text and reproduce it. I’ll admit, for ease of maintaining formatting between applications (especially the Office family), it may not be perfect but the effort is impresseive nontheless.

Most of the time I don’t want this, I’m more interested in the content. So Edit/Paste Special is my friend. But he’s a cumbersome friend. Something that Word doesn’t get a lot of credit for is how customizable it is. Yeah, you have to resort to use VB code sometimes, but at least it can be done fairly easily if you know what you’re doing or where to look. I finally took the time to learn how to make a macro for Edit/Paste Special. Check out this invaluable little article … I used it to assign Ctrl-Shift-V as my unformatted paste shortcut. The sweet life of efficiency.

Now here’s some culture I can get into! If hardcore purists can get upset at the recent Lord of the Rings movies, imagine what they’ll think of a three-hour musical extravaganza.

I look forward to seeing if they can pull it off, as it would be something I’d definitely consider going to despite not being a big fan of such shows. Of Joseph, Miss Saigon, and The Lion King, only the last has managed to impress me.

Just saw a great new trailer for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy over at UGO. You have to follow a link from their main page in order to view it, and it’s small and streaming, but it’s worth it!

Planning my next few months accordingly.

Super Bowl Ads

It’s extra difficult for us north of the border to see some of the great commercials that debut during the Super Bowl. Good thing there’s the internet. And sites like this.

I haven’t watched them all, but some suggestions so far: Sharon His Girlfriend, P-Diddy Driving Pepsi Truck, Hey Your Getting Robbed [sic], Old Man Henkins Never Throws Back, and my favorite: Killing The Cat. Oh, and anything involving monkeys. Monkeys in business suits.
