Oh website, how I’ve ignored thee.

February went by in a blur … trip to London for birthday, Sven & Mandy returned from Japan and promptly hosted a Movie Day, then they were in my neck of the woods a few weeks later and we went to a Danny Michel show in Toronto. And throughout the month, I was slowly gearing up to really get going on my Master’s research essay. Reviewing notes, realizing I didn’t have enough material, digging deeeper for more sources, trying to read through it all.

Outside of work, March was pretty much dedicated to researching & writing. Finished taking notes, organized said notes appropriately, then a couple of weeks for actual writing. Sounds simple enough, but I’m not a quick writer at the best of times. And really, weekends were far more productive: by the time I get home from work, make supper, eat it, clean up afterwards, + any other chores, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of time. Especially since I’m not one to just jump right back into where I left off … have to get back into the rhythm, so to speak.

I finished it off during the first weekend of this month, pretty much sticking to the schedule I had set out for myself. It has since been officially signed off on by Profs Lawless and Thompson — they only had a couple of minor suggestions between them, besides catching some typos, so revisions weren’t much at all. The paper now appears as a credited milestone on my transcript, so the only thing left is for Prof Lawless to sign my degree completion form, then that’s it!

In other news, I’m not only a biostatistician by training, but now also in name. Yes, after much waiting on other things to fall into place I’m now full-time (as opposed to being on contract) at GSK. The official title is Biostatistician I, in the Global Biostatistics & Programming group.

So that’s a mini-update for now. Hopefully I can get around to other updates as well as general site improvements.

Typing is weird right now — my hand is feeling somewhat numb. My team at work went out for an xmas lunch, followed up with a few games of bowling. My first game was pretty sad, somewhere in the 80s. The second was much more competitive, with the top four of us separated by three points. In the final one, I got on a roll and then after a strike in the ninth frame I closed out the tenth with two strikes and a nine! I don’t know where that came from, but it was good enough for best score on the day and the highest overall total. It sure didn’t start well, but I’m nothing if not adaptable.

Speaking of work, a couple of weeks ago I got a contract extension through the end of April. Hopefully in the next few months things will work out so that a permanent spot will be up for grabs, which I should have an inside track on. If not, then at least I’ll have some buffer employment until I find something else.

One of the great things about working at GSK is the flex hours. There are core hours of 9-3 Mon-Thur and 9-12 Fri. As long as you are there for that time, however you fit in the rest of your hours is up to you. They particularly encourage condensed work weeks: I typically fit in an extra hour per day so that I only need to work Friday mornings.

This comes in handy when, say, a new Harry Potter movie comes out and you already have commitments during the evening. You then have the option of seeing an early afternoon showing. Needless to say, the movie was great! I will definitely be seeing it again soon, this time going for the IMAX experience (sadly the first showings were already sold out).

In preparation for Goblet of Fire, I rewatched the first three movies on consecutive evenings last week. Prisoner of Azkaban is still the best of the bunch (but GoF now takes over top spot across the series), but I have to give the kids more credit than I had been for the first two. For some reason I had carried around the impression that the acting wasn’t all that great, but really it’s just fine. The only problem with watching all four in quick order is the discontinuity in their growing up. Just have to assume they don’t change much in while they are in school and have their growth spurts in the summer months not chronicled on film. :0)

The reason I couldn’t see a Friday night showing (and be able to avoid little kiddies in the theatre) was for GSK’s own Yule Ball … they just call it a Dinner and Dance … but really it’s a xmas party — with flair! (Sorry, recently watched Office Space). The place was decked out like a swingin’ 40’s club, complete with band, singers, and dancers with too much energy to burn. Very impressive set up.

It was a fun time — great company, good food, and a chance to meet coworkers’ significant others and see them outside of work. It’s funny being the young one there, where the parents say I’ve still got so much time before I need to worry about marriage & kids & mortages and all that fun stuff. Yet at the same time, there’s so many of my friends around the same age getting engaged, married, and now starting to have kids. Who knows, maybe such days won’t be all that far off in the future afterall.

One of these days I’m sure I’ll settle into a routine and things won’t seem so hectic.

I now have a couple of days of work at GSK under my belt, and I like how things are shaping up. Lots to absorb and plenty of training will be on the agenda for the first little while. It’s all so organized, which is quite the contrast from grad school life; in other words, it’s right up my alley.

I still have some unpacking and organizing to do, as I was in Ottawa from Thursday through Sunday. More on that trip later.

Before the move to ‘sauga (as some locals are wont to say), I bid a farewell to Waterloo. It’s hard to believe that I’d been living there for over five straight years; between school terms and work at RIM and on campus, I just seemed to be a permanent fixture in the area. And despite most of my frosh class being long gone and a number of good friends from RIM moving on, there were still plenty of folks to say goodbye to.

After my visit to Sudbury, I caught up with Jenny in her office on Tuesday. We had a chance to chat, and then hit up East Side Mario’s for lunch in the plaza. At lease she’ll be able to carry on the presence from our original AM with engineering electives class on campus.

On Wednesday evening, I had dinner with Kelli and Sarah B at Lucy’s. Patrick was supposed to join us, but after leaving work to take his cat to the vet, he completely forgot about it! He caught up with us later while we were still at the restaurant to apologize; it was such an un-Patrick thing, so we of course had to give him a hard time. It seemed like forever since I had seen Sarah, since every time we try to get together as a group she’s away traveling for work. The life of a jet-setting marketer, I guess.

The next day, Kelli snuck me into RIM 2 so I could say hey to some folks who I get to see even less. I was able to catch up with Elsa and AJ, and see Patrick and Eddy again. Richard found me just before he had to head off. Unfortunately Liz was busy with meetings in her office; probably putting out fires and saving the company, what else is new? There were a few other people I didn’t get to see, so some emails will be in order, but I also ran into other familiar faces in the SAP and business systems groups.

Afterwards, I cleaned out my office on campus, and said my goodbyes to some fellow grad students. That night, I was back on RIM campus to pick up Greg after work and he was able to get me a bunch of computer monitor boxes from new user setups — very handy for the packing process. With a couple of his coworkers, we went to Moose Winooski’s for some of their damn fine wings. I’m gonna miss those.

Besides all that, I managed to fit in some packing. Heather completed her own move out on the Thursday; I decided to avoid the awkward situation of proposing to her before she left.

It’s nice to feel organized and in control. With my sampling assignment for Monday out of the way, I don’t have anything else due for a few more weeks. I’m able to review and organize my class notes that were starting to accumulate in piles here and there. In particular, I can catch up on some reading for the classes that I’m auditing. It’s also a good stretch to start preparing for finals: a bit of work now can save cramming later on.

And speaking of preparations, there are real life things to look after.

There can certainly be lulls in the job hunting process, but fortunately I was expecting that and I’m pretty patient anyway. Prospects have progressed nicely: I have been offered the contract/coop position at GSK. Tomorrow afternoon I’m heading to Toronto to meet with a number of people from the research group at Mt. Sinai hospital (specifically, it’s the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute). And there’s at least one other position I’m being considered for in the Toronto area. I guess I’ll be deciding on things in short order.

Once that’s settled, then I worry about finding a place to live. Car research is my big thing right now, as a vehicle will be necessary if I’m in the Oakville/Mississauga area. If I’m in downtown TO, I can live without one for now. What a bewildering process, though; good thing there’s that internet thing all the kids are using nowadays to help out.

In the fine tradition of the pigeon-rat from The Simpsons, the janitor on Scrubs this week alluded to Leonard: half-kitten, half-monkey. Now where can I get me one of those?

I can’t believe how quickly these past couple of weeks have flown by. Sven and Mandy are now out in BC, hanging out for a bit before leaving for their teaching gig in Japan in a few days. Luckily we were able to get together beforehand. Last week Sven and I caught A Very Long Engagement at The Princess, where coincidentally enough his only other visit was to see another Audrey Tautou movie with me: Dirty Pretty Things. On the Friday night I went to Sven’s parents’ place with them, where we got in a final round of Mario Party 6 plus some other games.

The next day, Billie and Ryan came down from Ottawa to pick up a few things, so I mooched a ride with Sven that night and we went to London to visit with them. We (eventually) met up with them, Laura, and Deana at Laura’s place. Never rely on a girl’s schedule that involves a “quick” trip to the mall. We played some Trivial Pursuit (some sort of DVD version) before going to Billie’s mom place and breaking out Cranium (P-R-I-M-O edition … it’s a long story). Sven and I crashed there for the night. I got a ride back to Waterloo in the morning, but before Sven left town I made sure that he experienced at least one meal at Mel’s.

Once I got back to my place I watched an episode of Buffy (now onto season 4) before planning to take a nap and then getting down to some work. Well, I went to sleep at about 12:30 … and woke up a little over 6 hours later. I guess I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep the previous two nights.

Monday involved something of a field trip! I’ve spoken with one of my profs (Richard Cook, a great professor not to mention extremely helpful) a couple of times about job possibilities in the biostatistics field. He works regularly with the group from GlaxoSmithKline in Oakville, and since the pharmaceutical industry is high on my list of areas I’d like to work in, he invited me to a technical meeting he was attending there. I can’t talk about the content of the meeting, but it was very interesting. It was a good chance to get an in-person view of some of the problems they work on, as well as the organization of the biostats group. I spoke with a manager about some details of a coop position they have available, so I think I have a clearer picture of what would be in store for me in terms of starting out in the industry. Now if things were to work out with that coop job, it would alter the logistics of my graduation date; but experience seems to be the key and it would be an excellent opportunity and well worth technically delaying my graduation by a couple of terms. Well, we’ll see what happens. That’s just one possibility of many I’m looking at right now.

Of course there must be balance between work and fun. Putting aside thoughts of my career, I went to see House of Flying Daggers that night. The movie, and my first visit to the new Princess Twin, deserves a separate post.

I spent a lot of time this week getting myself organized in terms of school work. The end of the first month is a good time to review and summarize material, plus I want to be well positioned for the next round of assignments in the next week and a half. With job hunting and the research paper to worry about this term, I’d like to stay ahead of the game.
