Oh website, how I’ve ignored thee.

February went by in a blur … trip to London for birthday, Sven & Mandy returned from Japan and promptly hosted a Movie Day, then they were in my neck of the woods a few weeks later and we went to a Danny Michel show in Toronto. And throughout the month, I was slowly gearing up to really get going on my Master’s research essay. Reviewing notes, realizing I didn’t have enough material, digging deeeper for more sources, trying to read through it all.

Outside of work, March was pretty much dedicated to researching & writing. Finished taking notes, organized said notes appropriately, then a couple of weeks for actual writing. Sounds simple enough, but I’m not a quick writer at the best of times. And really, weekends were far more productive: by the time I get home from work, make supper, eat it, clean up afterwards, + any other chores, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of time. Especially since I’m not one to just jump right back into where I left off … have to get back into the rhythm, so to speak.

I finished it off during the first weekend of this month, pretty much sticking to the schedule I had set out for myself. It has since been officially signed off on by Profs Lawless and Thompson — they only had a couple of minor suggestions between them, besides catching some typos, so revisions weren’t much at all. The paper now appears as a credited milestone on my transcript, so the only thing left is for Prof Lawless to sign my degree completion form, then that’s it!

In other news, I’m not only a biostatistician by training, but now also in name. Yes, after much waiting on other things to fall into place I’m now full-time (as opposed to being on contract) at GSK. The official title is Biostatistician I, in the Global Biostatistics & Programming group.

So that’s a mini-update for now. Hopefully I can get around to other updates as well as general site improvements.

Well, my ass got handed to me on my survival analysis final. For a good 25% worth of the marks, I either left it blank or wrote some non-mark-worthy gibberish. You’d think I would have learned my lesson from the midterm. Actually, as bad as I thought that went, I ended up with a decent grade in the low eighties; the only marks I lost were for the one part-question I didn’t answer. No such hope this time.

I totally concentrated on the wrong things while studying: results and applied data analysis. While I was expecting there to be some derivations involved, I didn’t count on them being lifted basically from the notes. While studying I went over these enough to understand them, but obviously not in depth enough to be able to reproduce them.

The low mark I’ll receive won’t bug me as much as it might have in the past. It’s more about embarrassment before the prof, someone who I really respect. For all the career help and advice he’s given me over the past couple of terms, besides being a good teacher, it seems like learning the material and performing well is the least I could do.

It’s hard to believe that I have a mere five days of classes left. Ever. Over the past few weeks I’ve been making mental notes of the little things I’ll miss.

My multicolor pen. Anyone who has seen my notes from class will understand. I don’t have the neatest of handwriting, and years ago my note-reviewing consisted of deciphering monochromatic blobs of characters. But with a four-color pen and some diligence, my notes are a work of art. Blue: page titles, main text. Red: dates, page numbers, margin notes, underlines, example questions. Green: text for notes/theorems/etc, example solutions, figures and graphs. Black: subsection titles, note/theorem/etc titles. It’s a very involved system, which appears to be coming to an end.

I’m very particular about storing my notes: 2” D-ring binders. I can usually fit three courses worth comfortably in these, clearly marked, with orderly dividers for the sections within a class. I have a shelf for my stats notes, and one for applied math, both full. My stats ones might be handy to keep accessible for the time being, but as I’ve found over the past year, that’s not so much the case for AM.

Can you tell I’m anal?

As I complete my last set of assignments, will I have much opportunity to use LaTeX again?

When I started grad school, I rewarded myself with a new clipboard. In 5+ years of use, the one I picked up during Frosh week was looking pretty ratty. But I don’t see myself using one on a daily basis anymore.

I’ll miss not going to the Bomber, not watching football games where we inevitably get creamed.

Just as I’m comfortable getting around on the 6th floor of MC and orienting myself with the rest of campus while up there, that knowledge will fade from memory.

I’ve never printed anything on campus. I have a $40 allotment being a grad student; maybe I should find something frivolous to use it on.

The cheap food at the C & D will be fondly remembered. It was only in fourth year that I started frequenting there, and it didn’t take long for the selection to grow tiresome. I’ll give them credit that things have been much improved the past couple of terms. Better variety and quality.

I’m sure there was more, but I’m tired and will stop here.

It’s nice to feel organized and in control. With my sampling assignment for Monday out of the way, I don’t have anything else due for a few more weeks. I’m able to review and organize my class notes that were starting to accumulate in piles here and there. In particular, I can catch up on some reading for the classes that I’m auditing. It’s also a good stretch to start preparing for finals: a bit of work now can save cramming later on.

And speaking of preparations, there are real life things to look after.

There can certainly be lulls in the job hunting process, but fortunately I was expecting that and I’m pretty patient anyway. Prospects have progressed nicely: I have been offered the contract/coop position at GSK. Tomorrow afternoon I’m heading to Toronto to meet with a number of people from the research group at Mt. Sinai hospital (specifically, it’s the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute). And there’s at least one other position I’m being considered for in the Toronto area. I guess I’ll be deciding on things in short order.

Once that’s settled, then I worry about finding a place to live. Car research is my big thing right now, as a vehicle will be necessary if I’m in the Oakville/Mississauga area. If I’m in downtown TO, I can live without one for now. What a bewildering process, though; good thing there’s that internet thing all the kids are using nowadays to help out.

My survival analysis midterm a couple of days ago was officially craptacular; probably one of the worst midterms I’ve written. And it’s not because it was hard, since honestly I thought it wasn’t that bad at all. I messed up by spending too much time on the first question (and correcting silly mistakes), and then on part of a question I blanked on and wanted to come back to, I didn’t leave myself enough time to do so.

The questions also weren’t what I was expecting, so that threw me for a bit of a loop. But I don’t think there was much I could have done to be more prepared; I knew the material so I’ll just hope to make it up on the final.

At least I wasn’t the only one who didn’t do so great. I talked to a number of classmates afterwards and the consensus was that it didn’t go well for anyone. Oh well, at least it’s only worth 20%.

And speaking of school stuff, I better get ready to head to campus …

In the fine tradition of the pigeon-rat from The Simpsons, the janitor on Scrubs this week alluded to Leonard: half-kitten, half-monkey. Now where can I get me one of those?

I can’t believe how quickly these past couple of weeks have flown by. Sven and Mandy are now out in BC, hanging out for a bit before leaving for their teaching gig in Japan in a few days. Luckily we were able to get together beforehand. Last week Sven and I caught A Very Long Engagement at The Princess, where coincidentally enough his only other visit was to see another Audrey Tautou movie with me: Dirty Pretty Things. On the Friday night I went to Sven’s parents’ place with them, where we got in a final round of Mario Party 6 plus some other games.

The next day, Billie and Ryan came down from Ottawa to pick up a few things, so I mooched a ride with Sven that night and we went to London to visit with them. We (eventually) met up with them, Laura, and Deana at Laura’s place. Never rely on a girl’s schedule that involves a “quick” trip to the mall. We played some Trivial Pursuit (some sort of DVD version) before going to Billie’s mom place and breaking out Cranium (P-R-I-M-O edition … it’s a long story). Sven and I crashed there for the night. I got a ride back to Waterloo in the morning, but before Sven left town I made sure that he experienced at least one meal at Mel’s.

Once I got back to my place I watched an episode of Buffy (now onto season 4) before planning to take a nap and then getting down to some work. Well, I went to sleep at about 12:30 … and woke up a little over 6 hours later. I guess I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep the previous two nights.

Monday involved something of a field trip! I’ve spoken with one of my profs (Richard Cook, a great professor not to mention extremely helpful) a couple of times about job possibilities in the biostatistics field. He works regularly with the group from GlaxoSmithKline in Oakville, and since the pharmaceutical industry is high on my list of areas I’d like to work in, he invited me to a technical meeting he was attending there. I can’t talk about the content of the meeting, but it was very interesting. It was a good chance to get an in-person view of some of the problems they work on, as well as the organization of the biostats group. I spoke with a manager about some details of a coop position they have available, so I think I have a clearer picture of what would be in store for me in terms of starting out in the industry. Now if things were to work out with that coop job, it would alter the logistics of my graduation date; but experience seems to be the key and it would be an excellent opportunity and well worth technically delaying my graduation by a couple of terms. Well, we’ll see what happens. That’s just one possibility of many I’m looking at right now.

Of course there must be balance between work and fun. Putting aside thoughts of my career, I went to see House of Flying Daggers that night. The movie, and my first visit to the new Princess Twin, deserves a separate post.

I spent a lot of time this week getting myself organized in terms of school work. The end of the first month is a good time to review and summarize material, plus I want to be well positioned for the next round of assignments in the next week and a half. With job hunting and the research paper to worry about this term, I’d like to stay ahead of the game.

I’ve been home for a week now, and I think I’m comfortably out of school mode now. The last couple weeks of the term seemed to pass by in an odd haze. I wasn’t completely focused on studying or school work, but not really all that concerned with it and still getting it done.

On the last day of classes, I had that project and presentation for biostats due. I got things put together pretty slowly, but I think the paper part turned out rather well. The presentation was … well, a presentation. Never exactly been my favorite thing to do, but I got it over with and that’s that.

During the previous weekend, Lin came into town for her birthday. On the Saturday a bunch of us got together for a birthday lunch (in DC of all places, with pizza & cake). Sakina, Rashi, and Xiaoxin were there, as well as some of their friends I hadn’t met. That night some of us went to Sakina’s place at WCRI to watch movies and attempt making pancakes. I was in charge of the latter, and after some trial and error with the batter (made from scratch), we found an acceptable mixture. We watched Four Weddings and a Funeral first, and after pancakes Lin, Sakina, and I put on Love, Actually. I ended up staying and chatting until well after three in the morning, probably not the best idea with that project looming, but it was a welcome break from recent school monotony.

As mentioned, studying for Stat 831 went well. Sven, Mike and I were up late the night before, breaking in Mario Party 6, but the nice thing about afternoon exams is that you can sleep in (or in this case, have a nap after getting home the next morning). The exam itself went well for the most part. I realized afterwards that I made a pretty silly mistake on one question but overall I’m satisfied by how it went.

Biostats studying similarly went well. Prof Brown provided a copy of last year’s exam, so it was nice having that as an idea of what we might expect. I got what I wanted done in terms of studying by 4 pm on Sunday, the day before the exam, so I spent the rest of the time playing some Xbox (Simpson’s Hit & Run) and then watching the Survivor finale. Go Chris! Not because he was the last guy surviving, but because he overcame 6-1 female-male odds. Ami really got on my nerves despite my initial rooting for her. In the end, I think Julie was my favorite. Turns out she’s apparently now seeing host Jeff Probst. Lucky guy.

The biostats exam went very well except for a couple of parts. One in particular involved the use of a formula which I didn’t bother studying at all. It had been mentioned once, as a special case of a certain setup, and we never used it on any assignment. It was referred to by name only on the exam, so I didn’t even know where to derive it from. Bah, that pissed me off. Serves me right for taking that chance, I guess.

Somewhere in the final few weeks in Waterloo, I found time to go through the My So-Called Life DVDs I had copied. Sadly, that encompasses only 19 episodes of this wonderful show. It was cancelled in midseason, almost exactly 10 years ago now, and left many things up in the air. It brought back lots of memories of watching it in grade 10, and although some aspects definitely date the show, it holds up very well as a realistic look at what high school is really like. Now, it wasn’t always entirely realistic, but it’s certainly a much more grounded and believable show compared to most other teenage dramas (especially a lot of the glossy stuff to be found these days). And oh how I loved Claire Danes back in those days.

My first exam is tomorrow afternoon. So, tonight I’m heading to Sven’s parents’ place to watch some Survivor and play some GameCube (I think Mike is coming too, not sure of Mandy’s whereabouts). Then I’ll come back into town in the morning when Sven goes to work. I’ve kept up nicely with the Stat 831 material this term, so studying the past couple of days has gone really smoothly. And since I didn’t lose any assignment marks and lost only 1 on the midterm, I’m in a pretty good position. I’m expecting the exam to be pretty tough, since the midterm didn’t seem that way at all, but there’s not much more preparation I can do.

I’ve started studying for my biostats exam on Monday. That one has me a little more worried, since we didn’t have a midterm and some of the assignment questions were pretty tricky, so I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Apparently copies of last year’s exam have been left in our mailboxes, so I’ll pick that up after the 831 exam. I have tomorrow morning and the rest of the weekend to study. But Prof Brown’s experimental design exam was pretty fair last year, so I shouldn’t worry too much.

In some respects, exams don’t seem like a big deal this time around. I’m really looking forward to heading back to London next week, just so I can kick back and relax and play some Halo 2 (on order, and will be delivered to London any day — didn’t want to tempt myself here in KW!). Next weekend is xmas party and Movie Day, and Kyle will be in town for that which is cool. Patti is also trying to get the time off so she can join us for her first movie day experience. Billie & Ryan won’t be making the trip from Ottawa, though.

Okay, must escape this rambling mode and get some more studying done before I head off to meet Sven.

Taking thirty seconds to mention that the Prosper class rocks. Any more updating would make me feel guilty as I’m way behind on getting this presentation and report done. By late tomorrow afternoon I can look forward to a relaxing exam period of studying.
