So I thought I’d show some civic responsibility and watch the debates last night. I made it a good 45 minutes into it before falling asleep.
Watching these guys in the same room did confirm a few things. Paul Martin most closely fits the image of a head of state – well spoken, just enough passion, and some toughness. Jack Layton seems like a cool guy, but the poor man just seems to beg for votes and pushing the ‘third alternative’. Stephen Harper has no charisma whatsoever; I’m amazed that this guy was chosen to head up the Conservatives. If they had someone with any personality, they’d probably be running away with this thing. Oh, and Gilles Duceppe was there, not that it makes any difference; it’s clear how things will shape up in Quebec.
Where was Jim Harris? Not that I’ll vote for the Green Party, but I think 4% of the national vote is enough to merit participation in the debates.
As it stands now, the recent poll numbers are scary. I’m worried about the implications and the precedent of voting in a conservative government. Yes, the specter of American Republicans and the state of things down south is very disturbing.
I think change for the sake of change is pointless. Canada’s doing pretty well, from my opinion. I have a hard time believing that corrupt politicians exist in only one party – how about you just punish the individuals who did wrong and judge the others based on merit?
