I believe in the traditional definition of right-wing political wacko, which is why I’m actually going to vote in the upcoming federal election. And it’ll be a vote against Stephen Harper.
I’m a dreaded one-issue voter this time around, and the idea of revisiting the same-sex marriage issue just demonstrates to me how clearly out of touch Harper is. I don’t believe in absolute democracy — sometimes people can’t be trusted to vote for what’s right. What do you think the outcome of a referendum on same-sex marriage would be? The fact that it would even be close is scary. What if in the past decisions such as equal rights for women and blacks had been decided by free votes? I think we can guess how those would have turned out.
I think we’ll have another Liberal minority government a month from now. If they are propped up by the NDP and play nice, maybe we can avoid another election in a year’s time.
P.S. – thanks to Elections Canada for having a polling station right in my apartment building, how very convenient.
