No “Jesus is my Homeboy” Shirt for the Occasion

How is it mid-November already? It doesn’t feel like I’ve been particularly busy of late, but the time is flying by. Maybe it’s because the evenings seem just that much shorter now that it’s depressingly dark no matter what time I leave work.

A couple of weekends ago I went to London for my first visit since Brad & Lisa’s wedding. I hung out at their place on the Friday night, getting some homemade food and watching some DVDs. We put on a few episodes from the first season of The Muppets … horribly dated, but it’s amazing how nostalgia can override such shortcomings. We also watched the recent Cheaper By The Dozen, which surprisingly wasn’t all that bad. With Nick and his friend Katie there, it was a kid-friendly selection of material.

On Saturday afternoon I met up with Dean and he gave me the big tour of St. Peter’s Seminary. Yes, their security is lax and someone like me was able to infiltrate the campus. Architecturally and landscaping-wise, it’s a nice place. The students’ rooms are tiny, even by the standards of a school residence, and lacking internet connections. The horror! We hit up the downtown Ben Thanh (distinction now necessary, since there’s a new one near my folks’!) for some delicious #303 and then camped out at a Timmy’s to catch up on the last few months. I can now make fun of Dean for going to Western, since that’s where his priestschool is affiliated with.

That night my dad and I went out for dinner and took in a showing of Jarhead. I was surprised he was interested in seeing that one, because it’s not exactly the action-oriented kind of war movie which is more to his taste. I liked it, as will others with a cynical outlook on war in general and in particular the early battles of the Petroleum Wars … err, I mean the first Gulf War.

With a bit of effort, I tracked down Patti on Sunday afternoon. She was heading to the Western campus to meet up with her sister Sarah and some friends and I tagged along. Details were kind of sketchy at the outset, but what we ended up doing was watching some extreme mountain bike riding movie-thing. Like those ones of skateboarders doing crazy stuff, and more entertainingly failing to do crazy stuff. It wasn’t exactly something for me to really get into, but some of it was impressive nonetheless.

So that was that weekend. The upcoming one has potential to be just as busy, but more on that and other topics later.
