June’s a busy month, and I had to allocate my trips to London so that I wasn’t driving there each weekend. Getting the axe were Michelle’s birthday and Father’s Day, but they’re used to me not being exact on my timing from my school days. The other weekends involve weddings, with the theme of ex-roommates.
Last Saturday, I went with Patti to a wedding in Goderich for her ex-roommate (and someone I sorta knew from South) Lara. I don’t know how many years it’s been since I’ve seen her, and had no clue who the dude was she married. Seemed like a nice guy, though. The wedding was outdoors, but not until 7 in the evening so there was plenty of time for it to cool off; being right by the lake probably helped.
There were even a few other people there that I knew. Mike and I had figured out a couple of months ago that we both going, he as the date of one of the bridesmaids. When Patti and I arrived at the ceremony, we ran into Aimee Demeter (I’m probably not even close with my spelling). I forgot that she and Lara were good friends, so in hindsight I shouldn’t have been so surprised to see her.
As far as weddings go, this wasn’t nearly as painful as it could have been. It was a good chance to hang out with Patti, and Aimee’s boyfriend had a lot of crazy stories about shows with exotic animals that he does for kids. I promised Patti I’d get the pictures we took with my camera to her soon, so that’ll give me an excuse to organize whatever else I have on there and maybe post some updated stuff.
Before heading to London on the Friday night, Kyle found his way to Mississauga and I picked him up from the GO station. There was a big family reunion in town on Saturday, and he played the much-hyped role of “surprise attendee from a not-so long-lost relative”. :0) We hit up a Jack Astor’s for dinner, and they seem to have followed the route of East Side Mario’s, a.k.a. revamp the menu (and waitress outfits) and jack up the prices.
Kyle was just going to crash at my place while I was gone, but I ended up dropping him off with his cousin on my way out of town and he just stayed with her and her boyfriend until I came back on Sunday. I saw their place when I picked him up that afternoon, and it looks like an Ikea showroom. Speaking of which, I dragged Kyle to the North York one in my continuing search for replacement legs for a cabinet thing that was damaged during the move. No luck there, either, although I did pick up a new TV stand and finally found some adequate DVD shelving units after searching countless places since being in town. Of course they were out of stock, but I have a part number I can call to check in on at the closer Etobicoke location. My DVD storage space is getting precariously low, so something needs to be done.
We fit in a couple of movies while Kyle was here. I got him to watch Love that Boy, and then we randomly came across Layer Cake which was playing at the theatre across the street from my office. We saw that on Monday night, and if you’ve ever seen Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels then you know just what to expect. In fact, the director of Layer Cake was the producer for those two. I was pretty impressed with this one, particularly since I didn’t know much about it going in.
Kyle left the next morning for Grand ‘ol Sudbury, but he’ll be back in a couple of weeks. There’s a concert on Olympic Island that we’re going to on the 26th, headlined by Modest Mouse, a band Kyle was introduced to by this cool record dealer around the corner from his place. The guy has made some really good recommendations so far, and I’ve listened to a fair amount of MM courtesy of copies Kyle has supplied.
That’ll be the day after Rob & Kennah’s wedding, which is in Guelph with reception in Waterloo. The plan is pretty much the same as last weekend, except substituting for Goderich. I’ll go to London on Friday, pick up Patti the next day and head off for the main event. I’m looking forward to seeing a bunch of folks from the UW gang, it’s been a while for many of them.
