I just finished watching Far From Heaven, starring the divine Julianne Moore. A period piece set in the late fifties, it’s a methodic, character driven movie involving an idealistic family (well-respected father, devoted wife, two kids, nice house, etc, etc). The movie deals with such issues as homosexuality (& phobia), racism, and domestic abuse. Just the kind of stuff to make one completely infuriated by the ignorance that people are capable of.
It’s striking how these things can be so scandalous back then, but it makes you wonder just how much has changed. There’s probably less overt reaction in general, but it can hardly be claimed that things are anywhere near perfect. People can be so incredibly ignorant and hateful. I’m reminded of this almost daily, as I read the London Conservative Press …. err, London Free Press while back home. The continual “controversy” about same-sex marriage is just so ridiculous it’s hard to accurately describe how exasperated I am by it all.
