On Thursday night I went to see Kevin Smith’s Q&A at Roy Thompson Hall with Sven, Mandy, and Sheena. The event was put together by Ryerson’s student union, supported by a bunch of other schools. Sheena got the tickets at her school, Laurier, and they included (big yellow) bus transportation to Toronto. Apparently tickets were available from Waterloo as well, but I didn’t see any advertisement for it until the day of the event. But then again, I find life in grad school is often in isolation of what’s going on with the rest of campus.
If you’ve seen the Evening with Kevin Smith DVD, this is what the Q&A was all about. In fact, Thursday’s show was one of two being filmed for the follow up! So maybe I’ll be visible in a Kevin Smith DVD coming to a store near you. I sat with Sven in the lineup to ask questions, and although it didn’t seem we were too far back in line, in reality we ended up not coming even close to the mic. And Smith talked for four hours! You just don’t get through a whole lot of people’s questions with these things.
Anyway, the event was hilarious. Topics covered everything from Dora the Explorer to some quick reviews of recent movies. I seriously wonder just how much material will make it onto the DVD because of all the Canadian content. How many Americans are going to understand what the hell all the talk about Degrassi and Tim Hortons is all about? Jason Mewes was on stage for a little while, but most of the night was sitting in the audience off to one side with other VIPs. Near the end, Sven got Smith’s attention and called for him to bring the wife onstage. She was too shy to come up, but Mewes had a mic and was relaying her answers to a couple of questions.
All in all, it was very cool and I’m looking forward to see how the DVD turns out.
I’m back in London for the weekend right now. Just lounging around for a bit before I head to the bus station to go back to KW. I just finished watching the Raptors game where they incredibly came back from a 19 point 4th quarter deficit to beat the 8-1 Spurs! The best part was that it was mostly second stringers, as Carter and Rose had their ass nailed to the bench (again).
I got together with Patti last night. Can you believe there were no late showings of Sponge Bob? C’mon, it’s not just for little kids, some people may want to see it after 9:30. Well, I had promised Patti to show her Garden State at some point, and I had it on my laptop after downloading it a few days earlier (of course, I’ll definitely be buying the DVD once it comes out just before the New Year). So we hooked up the laptop to the big screen at my folks’ and watched it there. You’d think that after seeing it four times now in a few months that I’d be tired of it, but the fact that it’s still just as enjoyable says a lot.
Other than that, the weekend has been pretty laid back. Got some review reading done for Stat 831, oh, and watched The Secret Lives of Dentists on Friday night. Maybe I’ll have more to say about that later.
