Polka Dot Door

I was talking to Lin the other night, and she was shocked to realize that I’ve never met her good friend JoJo. They take similar classes and are on stream with each other, so it’s strange that I haven’t bumped into her by now. So I referred to her as “Polkaroo.”

Now it was my turn to be shocked, because Lin had *no idea* what I was talking about. Didn’t know what Polka Dot Door was, references to Marigold, Humpty and Imagination Day meant nothing to her. Talk of Polkaroo surely convinced her I was crazy. I tried strengthening my case with relevant links, but I never realized just how Canadian this kids show was! There’s barely any good info on the net. People, back me up here: this was a staple of Canadian childhood in the 80s, was it not?

Lots of digging finally resulted in some decent pages. This online encyclopedia of all places has a nice summary. This dude has a nostalgic look back; check out the fourth paragraph. Polkaroo has since struck out on his own: here’s his TVO bio.

Polka Dot Door still airs once a week on TVO: I’ve told Lin and Sakina that I’ll make them watch an episode at 6 a.m. on a Saturday one day!
